Transformation of the Day: Cassandra lost 56 pounds. Her turning point came when she began to have sharp chest pains and thought she could be experiencing a heart attack. After going to the hospital, she was left with no clear answers for the pain, but she was determined to change her lifestyle. So, at the age of 26, she decided to have VSG weight loss surgery.


What was your motivation? What inspired you to keep going, even when you wanted to give up?

One day, I had this sharp pain in my chest. It kept happening, and I thought I was having a heart attack. I went to the hospital, and after testing, I was cleared and told to take it easy because they didn’t know what the cause was. That day was so horrifying, and I knew it was time to make a change. 

I started looking at my options for weight loss surgery. I found a doctor through a family member and followed through with the steps to get qualified for the surgery.

Is weight loss surgery part of your journey? Yes, weight loss surgery is part of my journey. After years of struggling with my weight since my teens years, I decided to get VSG at the age of 26. [vertical gastric sleeve]

How did you change your eating habits? Due to the type of surgery I was having, I had to begin shifting my diet to get used to the extreme shift I would be going through. That meant cutting down/out of fried foods, sugar, and alcohol. 

Now that I’ve had the surgery, I can only eat about 4 ounces of food per meal. My diet consists of a high protein, low carb, and low sugar diet. 

What did your workout routine consist of? 

At 368.5 pounds, it hurt to move my body constantly. I would walk maybe two laps around my complex prior to the surgery. After the surgery (since I’m still new post-op), I have only been approved to do light exercise, such as walking and low-intensity cardio, until the surgeon clears me for more intense physical activity.

What was your starting weight? 365.8 pounds

What is your current weight? 310 pounds

What is your height? I’m 5’7″.

When did you start your journey? I had weight loss surgery on November 21, 2021.

How long did your transformation take? I am currently four months post-op from surgery. 

What is the biggest lesson you’ve learned so far? Weight loss surgery is a tool. But it only works if you work with it. It’s hard! It’s super hard unlearning YEARS of unhealthy habits that have been passed down. But you have to keep going and relearn new habits and a new way of living. You owe yourself the life you always envision, and it starts with taking care of yourself. 

What advice do you have for women who want to lose weight? Choose you first. I know it’s hard. I know your routine seems comfortable, but comfortability will only hurt you in the end. Get comfortable with change.
